Train Trips

Train tours take you back to the golden era of luxury train travel, with dining cars set with fine linen and crystal, and observation cars offering panoramic views. Train tours roll through some of the world's most spectacular landscapes. Trains can travel where cars cannot, so passengers on train tours marvel at scenic vistas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

On some train tour itineraries, passengers stay onboard the train overnight. Long after watching the sun fall below the horizon through wide panoramic windows, passengers on these train trips settle into their own private sleeping staterooms, comfortable and elegantly outfitted. While they sleep they are carried to the tour's next stop.

Other train tours utilize the train only for upscale transportation between destinations. When each day's train travel ends, passengers disembark and stay in hand-picked hotels. Classic train vacations include: trans-continental train trips via the American Orient Express in the United States, train vacations through Mexico's Copper Canyon, Alpine train tours on the Glacier Express in Europe, luxurious train trips with the Royal Scotsman in Scotland, and train travel aboard the Great South Pacific Express in Australia.

Train tours are classified according to the quality of amenities and accommodations.

Budget Train Tours - Tours typically range from $45 to $130 per person, per day, plus airfare.
First Class Train Tours - Tours typically range from $80 to $275 per person, per day, plus airfare.
Deluxe Train Tours - Tours typically range from $100 to $400 per person, per day, plus airfare.
Luxury Train Tours - Tours typically range from $400 to $600 per person, per day, plus airfare.

Incorporating many of the US national parks is the "Best of the West" train tour. Others include the California parks, Yosemite, Denali, and may also include a cruise.

Seeing Canada by rail is one of the most spectacular tours I've ever taken. Whether you cross the country on the Transcanadian trip from Toronto to Vancouver, see British Columbia and Alberta, including Jaspar and Banff and the scenic Lake Louise, Rocky Mountaineer [ link to www.rockymountaineer.com] combines luxury and convenience by allowing you to design your vacation using rail alone or combining with a self-drive component. You choose your hotel category and the length of your stay. One tip: the upgrade to Gold Leaf service is well worth it!
